Fostering the Common Good March 27-28, 2009 Three events presented at Saint Francis University: March 27 7 p.m. | | The Road to Peace and Justice: Creative Nonviolence in a World of Violence A presentation by Noble Peace Prize Nominee, the Rev. John Dear, S.J. To be held in the John F. Kennedy Student Center Lounge. Free and open to the public. (CES credit for Saint Francis University students.) | | | | | March 27 and 28 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. | | The North American Undergraduate Conference in Religion and Philosophy The third annual North American Undergraduate Conference in Religion and Philosophy features student presentations on a variety of subjects, from science and technology, to globalization and poverty. Presenters will be representing a range of northeastern colleges and universities. Past conferences have had an international presence with students traveling from as far away as Norway. The conference is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to share their research and learn from their colleagues at other schools. Moreover, it brings faculty from different institutions together to share ideas and insights. To be held in the John F. Kennedy Student Center Lounge. This event is free and open to the public. Speaker Biographies | |  | | Rev. John Dear, S.J. Nobel Peace Prize nominee and author, Rev. John Dear, S.J. is a Jesuit priest, peace activist, organizer, lecturer, retreat leader and author/editor of 20 books on peace and nonviolence including Living Peace, published by Doubleday. His most recent books include, A Persistent Peace: One Man's Struggle for a Nonviolent World and Transfiguration: A Meditation on Transforming Ourselves and Our World. He was nominated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2008 for the Nobel Peace Prize. | | | | | | | |  | | Br. Ed Coughlin, O.F.M. Br. Edward Coughlin is vice president for the Franciscan mission at St. Bonaventure University and an associate professor in the School of Franciscan Studies/Franciscan Institute. His teaching has been primarily directed to the integration of psychology, spirituality, and the Franciscan Spiritual Tradition, spiritual formation and spiritual direction. Ed recently edited and wrote the introduction for Works of St. Bonaventure X: Writings on the Spiritual Life. | | | | | | | |  | | Br. Bill Short, O.F.M. Br. Bill Short is a friar of the St. Barbara Province of the Franciscan Friars. Since 1983, he has been teaching at the Franciscan School in Berkeley in the area of Christian Spirituality, with a special emphasis on Franciscan Spirituality. Currently, he is Guardian of the Friars at Mission San Miguel in San Miguel, CA, where he teaches in the Novitiate and is also the gardener and wine-maker. | | | | | | | |  | | Sr. Joanne Schatzlein, O.S.F., R.N. Sr. Joanne Schatzlein is a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi whose Motherhouse is in Milwaukee. She is currently the director of the office of corporate ministries for her congregation and continues to serve as a staff member for Franciscan Pilgrimage Programs based in Franklin, WI. She lectures internationally, promoting an understanding of Franciscan history and spirituality in ongoing formation, retreat work, and higher education. |
