The DiSepio Institute for Rural Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the Cambria County Running and Walking Club, sponsored its first 5K training session for beginners on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in the Stokes Athletics Center. Art Remillard, president of the Cambria County Running and Walking Club, welcomed a crowd of over 35 walkers, runners and joggers to the seminar entitled From Couch Potato to 5K Finisher in 8 Weeks, the third event offered in the runner’s series by the DiSepio Institute.Melinda Krimmel, an ACSM-certified exercise physiologist on the DiSepio staff, demonstrated basic strength and stretching exercises that would provide fitness and prevent injury, and she discussed the importance of good nutrition in a training program. Felix Moreno, SFU head track and field and cross country coach, provided expertise on training programs for beginners and more advanced runners and walkers. Kevin Doyle, manager of Up-N-Running shoe store, provided information on proper foot wear. This event was free and open to the general public.
The DiSepio Institute plans to hold another 5K training seminar in September for anyone who has ever wanted to complete a running, jogging, or walking 5k (3.1 miles) race. A 5K event will be held on campus on November 1. Pre-registration will be required through the Office of Health and Wellness Initiatives. Details on the training seminar and the 5K event will be publicized this summer.
