SFU COACH DON FRIDAY ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO 2009-10 ROSTER
LORETTO, Pa. (June 26, 2009) – Saint Francis University head coach Don Friday announced three additions to the 2009-10 Red Flash men’s basketball roster, giving the coaching staff a total of 10 new faces during Friday’s second season in Loretto.
Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Birmingham Brother Rice), Chris Johnson (Newport News, Va. / Denbigh) and Tony Peters (Roselle, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) have already reported to campus for summer classes and workouts. Twelve members of SFU’s 15-player 2009-10 roster are currently on campus, including the entire true freshman class of seven.
“I am very excited to have Austin, Tony and Chris join our Red Flash basketball family,” said Friday, who is holding his individual and team camps this week. “All three are expected to contribute right away, and will certainly bring depth to our program.”
Fowler is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound forward out of Detroit’s Brother Rice, where he was voted all-Catholic, all-League, and all-Oakland County among other accolades following his senior season. He averaged 17 ppg and 9 rpg as a senior and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. He is also a tremendous student, earning a 4.0 grade-point-average and graduating in the top ten percent of his class. Fowler will study Biology at Saint Francis University.
“Austin comes from a terrific basketball program at Brother Rice in Detroit, Mich.,” Friday said. “He is a versatile forward who has very good skills on the perimeter and has a good nose and instincts for being around the basketball.”
Peters stands 6-foot-8, 200 pounds and will compete for playing time at the power forward position. He hails from Roselle, N.J., where he helped Seton Hall Prep to a 23-6 record and the Iron Hills Conference titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He also helped guide the Pirates to the Parochial A state title in 2006, and compiled an overall record of 76-13 in three years, including a 31-1 mark in 2006-07. Peters averaged a career-best 23 points and 14 rebounds as a senior, and was the MVP of the Seton Hall Christmas Tournament. Peters will study Computer Science at Saint Francis University.
“Tony Peters comes from Seton Hall Prep in West Orance, N.J., and played for coach Bobby Farrell,” Friday said. “Tony comes to us from a winning basketball program that plays in a very competitive league. His length and athleticism will give us a dimension on our front line that we have not had.”
Johnson is a 5-10, 168-pound point guard out of Denbigh High School in Newport News, Va. He was a four-year letterwinner in basketball, and a three-year letterwinner in volleyball. Johnson was a three-year Most Valuable Player for the Patriots. He averaged 15.4 ppg, 6.32 apg, 5.61 spg and 3.21 rpg as a senior, while shooting 56.7 percent from the field and 44.5 percent from outside the 3-point arc. He was an all-Peninsula District First Team selection as a senior, helping the Patriots to a 16-9 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the tough Peninsula District. He averaged 13.7 points and 3.2 steals per game as a junior. For his career, Johnson shot over 75% from the free-throw line and eclipsed the 1000-point plateau. A member of the Daily Press All-Star Team, Johnson is also an excellent student. He was ranked 59th out of 350 in his class, and carried a 3.2 grade-point-average. Johnson is seeking his degree in Accounting at Saint Francis.
“Chris Johnson has been a winning fixture for the Denbigh basketball program coached by Bryan Weaver,” Friday said. “Chris is a true point guard who has good quickness and imagination. He will certainly give us more depth at our point guard position.”
In other Red Flash men’s basketball news, Friday announced that forward/center Randy Spaid (Portage, Pa. / Portage) will not return for his senior season.
“We will continue to support Randy as he completes his requirements for a Saint Francis diploma,” Friday said.
