Gavigan to Join Red Flash Field Hockey in 2009

LORETTO, Pa. (April 29, 2008) – Goalkeeper Kelsey Gavigan (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional/Philadelphia) will join the Red Flash Field Hockey team for the 2009 season, as announced by head coach Stacey Bean on Wednesday.   Gavigan will join the Red Flash after spending her first season at Division II Philadelphia University.   She will be eligible to compete in 2009, as Philadelphia dropped its field hockey program.

“Kelsey comes to SFU with a year of competitive college experience in two sports – this experience will help the Red Flash from day one next season,” said Coach Bean. “Maturity, work ethic and athleticism are perhaps Kelsey’s greatest strengths on the field and will allow her make an immediate impact in our program.”

Gavigan saw action in four games for the Rams, making 10 stops for a .667 save percentage.   Gavigan is also an attack on the Ram’s lacrosse team.  While at Lower Cape May Regional, Gavigan was named to the All-Cape Atlantic League Team for two consecutive seasons, and also earned First Team All-Gazette honors.   Gavigan was a 12-time letterwinner for the Tigers, competing in field hockey, lacrosse and basketball.  She will major in Occupational Therapy at Saint Francis.

“I chose SFU partly because of the amazing trip I had on my overnight visit.  Being a freshman at college, I already knew what to expect from college life.  The team was so tight-knit and seemed like they all liked each other,” said Gavigan.  “I also chose SFU because I have the chance to play Division I field hockey, and study the physical therapy.   My parents were also a big helper in making this decision, they loved the campus and the atmosphere and they feel comfortable with me going to SFU.  Coach Bean was the deciding factor in why I chose SFU.  She is so dedicated to this sport, and this team, that it was almost impossible to say no.  She is such a caring individual and I cannot wait for her to push me to my full potential.”
