Red Flash Win Second Game of NEC-Opening Twinbill at Mount
St. Mary’s
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Freshman Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif. /
Rodriquez) gave up two unearned runs and struck out six in leading the Saint
Francis softball team to a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of its Northeast
Conference-opening doubleheader at Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
Seniors Nicole Waligora (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop)
and Janelle McCoy (New Paris, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge) had two hits each in the
game to help the Red Flash improve to 13-16 overall, and 1-1 in the NEC.
The Mountaineers took the opener 3-2 after Lisa Curreri made
a game-saving defensive play to end the game, and secure the victory for MSM.
Junior Jamie Dixon (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) had a sacrifice
fly in the first inning to give SFU a 1-0 lead in the night cap. Junior
Christina Aulbach (York, Pa. / Dallastown Area) and McCoy had back-to-back RBI
doubles in the second inning, and McCoy eventually scored on a wild pitch to
stake the Red Flash to a 4-0 lead. Layne made the lead hold up to help SFU win
its first conference game of 2009.
Sophomore Raquel Rugani (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) had an
RBI single in the first inning, and senior Kara Stroup (Valencia, Pa. / Mars)
had a solo home run in the second inning, of Game 2. However, Mount scored
three unanswered runs to steal the 3-2 win.
The Red Flash will return to action on Sunday when they
travel to Monmouth for another NEC doubleheader.
