Six Red Flash Soccer Players Named to NEC’s All-Conference Second Team
LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 7, 2008) – Six players from the Saint Francis women’s soccer team have been named to the Northeast Conference Second Team All-Conference as announced by the league on Thursday. The Red Flash finished the season with a record of
Senior forward Alanna Vespa (Ancaster, Ontario/Saint Mary’s Catholic), junior forward Rachael Seibert (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Township), junior defender Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), junior defender Katie Dougherty (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), junior goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and freshman midfielder Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) were selected to the team by the head coaches of the NEC.
Ariana Calderon of Long Island was named both the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Amanda Wheeler of Fairleigh Dickinson was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Tracey Bartholomew of Long Island was chosen as the Coach of the Year by her fellow coaches.
The Red Flash and Central Connecticut State each had six players honored, the most from any team. CCSU had four players named to the first team and two to the second.
Vespa finished the season with 6 goals and 8 assists for a total of 20 points. Seibert, who was honored as the Brine/NEC Player-of-the-Week earlier in the season, was right behind her with 8 goals and 3 assists for 19 points. Flick, who missed the final games of the season due to injury, had 4 goals and 2 assists. Three of those goals came in a hat trick at Holy Cross on August 28. She earned the Brine/NEC Rookie-of-the-Week honor for her performance in that game.
Dougherty and Valentine have been defensive leaders all season long for the Red Flash, leading a unit that has surrendered only 21 goals to opponents.
Boyer finished the season with a record of 5-3-4, and a save percentage of .831. Her goals against average was a 0.95 for the season, and she earned 4 shut outs. She has also been honored by the NEC before, earning the Defensive Player-of-the-Week nod after recording her 3rd and 4th shut outs of the season in the same week.
