Red Flash’s Lewis Named NEC Defensive Player-of-the-Week
LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2008) – The Northeast Conference announced Monday that Saint Francis football player Scott Lewis (South Fork, Pa./Bishop McCort) has been named the league’s Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his performance in the team’s game against Wagner on October 18. The Red Flash lost to the Seahawks 17-13.
Lewis, a sophomore linebacker, had 3 solo stops and 20 assisted tackles for a total 23 tackles against the Seahawks. He entered halftime only 1 tackle short of his season high of 13, and went on to shatter that number, as well as his previous career high of 18 total tackles. He also had 2 tackles for loss in the game.
His 23 tackles match the single game high in the Football Championship Subdivision this year. Nathan Totino of Duquesne had 23 against Albany, while Nathan Williams of Murray State made 23 stops in a game against Illinois State.
Lewis also entered the Saint Francis record books. He now sits tied for third in single game tackles. Dan Kanuch had 23 stops against Frostburg in 1980, while Daunte Neal matched that number in 2000 against Central Connecticut State.
Voted a captain by his teammates, Lewis has consistently led the Red Flash defense all season long. He currently has 88 total tackles and ranks 5th in the nation for Division 1 FCS with an average of 12.57 tackles per game. He finished first in the NEC in 2007 with 126 total tackles, and 4th in the FCS with 12.6 tackles per game.
The Red Flash will travel to New York to take on the Albany Great Danes in an NEC match up at 4:07 P.M. on Saturday at University Field in Albany.
