Red Flash Field Hockey Falls to Monmouth 3-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Oct. 19, 2008) – Freshman Claire Wilkie (Durban, South Africa/Danville Park Girls) scored her second goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Saint Francis field hockey team fell to the Monmouth Hawks by a score of 3-1 on Saturday in West Long Branch.

Wilkie gave the Red Flash the lead early in the game, scoring 3:19 into the contest. Her goal was unassisted.

The Hawks battled back later in the half. Molly Passarella scored an unassisted goal of her own rebound at 20:08 to tie the game at 1-1 going into the locker room. She then scored again off a pass from Courtney Stetson just 5 minutes into the second half to put the Hawks up 2-1.

Enza Mazza took a pass from Passarella, who had 5 points on the day, and knocked it past Red Flash goalkeeper Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich./Saint Phillip) to put the game away at 3-1 at 15:13 in the second half.

Reifsteck had 10 saves, as the Hawks out shot the Flash 22-4. Monmouth goalie Melissa Kats had 2 stops on the day.

Wilkie led the way for the Red Flash with 2 shots, both on goal. Jesse Ehrhardt (Hackettstown, N.J./Mount Olive) also had a shot on goal for SFU. Mazza led the charge for the Hawks, with 8 shots, 4 on goal, followed by Passarella with 7.

The team will return home to host Quinnipiac University at DeGol Field on Friday October 24 at 7 P.M. They will also host Sacred Heart on Sunday, October 26, at noon. The match up with Sacred Heart will also be the Red Flash’s annual Senior Day.
