Red Flash Field Hockey Suffers Setback at Rider
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2008) – The Saint Francis field hockey team couldn’t turn last week’s victory into a winning streak, falling 5-0 to Rider on Friday afternoon in Loudonville. The Flash are now 1-2 in the Northeast Conference.
The team will travel to New Jersey for an NEC match up at Monmouth at noon on Sunday in West Long Branch.
Scoring started early, with the Broncs taking the lead 1:37 into the first half on an unassisted goal by Virginia Egusquiza. Egusquiza had 4 shots on goal in the contest.
Rider scored again 26:35 into the first half to make the score 2-0. Diana Celebre deflected a shot by Allison Vogel into the goal from 5 yards out.
Amanda Barretta scored next for Rider a minute later to bring the Bronc’s lead to 2-0. Egusquiza sent the ball over to Barretta, who deflected it past Red Flash stopper Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich./Saint Phillip) into the net from 5 yards out.
Celebre would score the next 2 goals for the Broncs for a hat trick. Tricia Crotty sent a pass to Celebre, who beat Reifsteck on a breakaway 48:31 into the game. Allison Vogel would pick up the assist on Celebre’s 3rd and final goal of the night at 52:25.
The Broncs out shot the Red Flash 25-2 in the game. Belen Albanes (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) and Eileen Paccione (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) both had shots for the Flash.
Reifsteck stopped 13 of the 18 shots she faced in the game, making 9 saves in the first half alone. Rider goalkeeper Lyndsie Johnson made one stop on a shot from Albanes in the second half.
