Red Flash Tennis Teams Off To Best Starts This Decade
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 13, 2008) – The Saint Francis men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their best starts this decade by coming away with a sweep of the Robert Morris squads in Northeast Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Flash men came away with a 7-0 victory to improve to 3-1 on the season, which is the team’s best start since 2001-02. The SFU women were victorious 4-3 to improve to 3-1-1 on the season, the best start in program history.
Sophomore Stephen Kowalski (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) won his No. 1 singles match, 7-5, 6-1, over David Pinto, freshman Steven Child (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster County Day) took his No. 2 singles match over Daniel Becker 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and senior Andrei Sandu (Windsor, Ontario, Canada / Kennedy) defeated Aaron Haas, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Daniel Fleming (Gas City, Ind. / Mississinewa) downed Nazari Dorosh 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while senior Jeffrey Seevers (Clear Lake, Texas / Clear Lake) and junior Jordan Kowalski (Bryam, N.J. / Lenape Valley Regional) won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Stephen Kowalski and Seevers teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles, while Fleming and Jordan Kowalski won at No. 2 doubles and seniors David Kirby and Kyle Primeau (Windsor, Ontario, Canada / Riverside) came away with a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Saint Francis men concluded its fall season at 3-1, already besting the season total of two wins from a year ago.
In women’s action, the Red Flash won two of three matches contested in doubles, while two freshmen and a senior won at singles to defeat the Colonials, 4-3.
Newcomers Maya Ranchod (Elwood City, Pa. / Lincoln) and Brianna Mapes (Somerset, Pa. / Shanksville) won at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Ranchod defeated Sara Meier 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, while Mapes beat Gwen Dalphon 6-4, 6-3. Senior Abigail Ball (Ebensburg, Pa. / Central Cambria) tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win over Libby Shaw at No. 3 singles.
Ball and freshman Stephanie Rivera (El Paso, Texas / America’s High School) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Shaw and Kali Delorie, 8-2. Freshmen Devynn Sarver (Mt. Clemens, Mich. / Fraser) and Julia Meier (St. Mary’s, Pa. / Elk County Catholic) posted an 8-4 win over Sara Meier and Dalphon at No. 3 doubles.
The Red Flash women will wrap up their fall season at the Niagara tournament on Friday and Saturday.
