Red Flash’s Boyer Earns ECAC Accolades
LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2008) – Saint Francis women’s soccer goalkeeper Jessica Boyer’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) two shut outs this weekend have earned her two awards, as she was named the Defensive Player-of-the-Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference as announced by the league on Tuesday.
This is Boyer’s second award in two days. She was also recognized by the Northeast Conference as the Brine/NEC Defensive Player-of-the-Week on Monday.
Boyer had 8 saves against Central Connecticut on Friday to lead the Red Flash to their first NEC win of the season by a score of 2-0. She was solid again as the team hosted Quinnipiac on Sunday, making 4 stops for her 3rd shut out of the season in 110 minutes of play that ended in a 0-0 tie. ECAC Co-Offensive Player-of-the-Week Fortuna Velaj had 2 shots on goal, but couldn’t get either one past Boyer. The shut out against Quinnipiac was the 10th of her career.
The junior net minder now has 39 saves in 632:49 of action this season, with a goals-against average of just 0.71. Her first shut out this season came on August 31 in a 0-0 tie at Northeastern.
This is the second straight season that Boyer has not allowed a goal against Quinnipiac. It is also the first time in 6 years that the Red Flash have beat CCSU. The last time SFU beat the Blue Devils was in 2002.
The team will travel to Pittsburgh for an NEC match up with in-state rival Robert Morris on October 12.
