Red Flash Soccer Battles to 0-0 Tie with Quinnipiac

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2008) – With most of the action happening at midfield rather than in front of the net, the Saint Francis women’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie against Northeast Conference foe Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Loretto.

The Red Flash had great defensive plays, particularly by juniors Denise Eckert (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and Brittany Valentine (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) but couldn’t find the net.

"We played hard, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough," said head coach Brenda van Stralen. "This is conference play now, so we really need to work on getting those wins."

Freshman forward Traci Flick (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) led the way for the Flash with 3 shots, including 2 on goal. Defender Jennilee Morrison (Jeannette, Pa./Jeannette), forward Rachael Seibert (McMurry, Pa./Franklin Regional) and defender Katie Dougherty (Downington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each had 2 shots, with one of Dougherty’s coming on goal. Defender Alyssa Kersey (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had Red Flash’s only other shot on goal.

Goalkeeper Jessica Boyer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) had 4 saves for SFU, earning her third shut out of the season. Bobcat goalkeeper Jillian Kelley also had 4 saves in the contest. The Red Flash out shot the Bobcats 15-6.

Forward Fortuna Velaj had 3 shots for the Bobcats, with 2 on goal. Kristina Del Mistro and Susan Donovan each had a shot on goal as well.

The Red Flash will travel to Pittsburgh for an NEC contest with Robert Morris on Oct. 12.
