Saint Francis Falls Short Versus Western Michigan
EAST LANSING, Mich. (August 31, 2008) – Sophomore Patrick Fleming (Dunedin, New Zealand / Bayfield) and freshman Kingsley McLeod (Rocky Mount, N.C. / Rocky Mount) each tallied their first goal of the season, but the Saint Francis men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision versus Western Michigan on Sunday at the Michigan State/Radisson Men’s Soccer Classic.
The Red Flash dropped to 0-2 on the season, but will look to get their first win when they visit Duquesne at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead at 15 minutes, 24 seconds when Tyler Rosenhagen scored from inside the 18-yard box.
But Fleming, who had five goals as a freshman in 2007, tallied his first of the year at 28:24 off a pass from sophomore Brent Brockman (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York)to tie the match at 1-1.
Saint Francis kept Western Michigan off the scoreboards for the next 29-plus minutes, but Jordan Fylonenko scored two goals in five minutes to put his side up 3-1. His first goal came at exactly 58:00 when he got behind the defense on a pass from Rosenhagen.
Fylonenko tallied his second goal at 62:59 off a cross to make it 3-1.
Junior Brian Murphy (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) set up SFU’s next goal at 85:52. He sent a cross into the box, where McLeod was able to get his head on it to pull the Red Flash within 3-2 with just over four minutes left in regulation.
Neither team recorded a shot over the final four minutes.
Saint Francis held a 9-8 advantage in shots for the game, including three off the bench from junior Omo Sumah (AccoKeek, Md. / Gwynn Park). Western Michigan held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Brad Williams (San Lorenzo, Calif. / Arroyo) stopped two shots in the game.
