SFU’s Reifsteck Named An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American
LORETTO, Pa. (June 12, 2008) – Saint Francis senior-to-be, Erin Reifsteck (Battle Creek, Mich. / Saint Phillip), has been named as the university’s 32nd all-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday morning.
A three-year starter for the Red Flash field hockey team, Reifsteck was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Third Team, as voted upon by members of CoSIDA. She became eligible for the national honor by being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 First Team in late May. She also joins SFU men’s soccer player Bryce Luetzen (Denver, Colorado / Denver Lutheran) as recipients of the program’s national honor during the 2007-08 academic year.
Reifsteck has a 3.99 grade-point-average in Psychology. She helped guide the Saint Francis field hockey team to its first-ever winning season in the Northeast Conference this past year, as well as the team’s first postseason berth. She ranked third in the nation in saves per game (9.63), and 12th in save percentage (.789). Reifsteck led the NEC in saves (154) and saves per game. She compiled a 3.47 goals against average on the season. Reifsteck is the all-time Red Flash leader in saves with 356. In addition to her on-field accomplishments, Reifsteck was elected President of the Saint Francis Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2008-09 school year, is a three-time team captain, a two-time NEC all-Scholar, and has been on the Saint Francis Academic Honor Roll every semester. A member of the NEC Commissioners Honor Roll and the NEC All-Tournament Team, she has earned a 4.0 GPA in five of six semesters at Saint Francis.
Wagner swimmer Alexandra Tomlinson joins Reifsteck as the only Northeast Conference student-athletes to garner honors on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s At-Large three teams.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA Championship sports.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at large and women’s at large.
