Red Flash in 13th out of 14 in SFU’s First Tournament of 2008

Tega Bay, S.C. – Escaping the late March snow storm, the Saint Francis women’s golf team headed south to the Tega Bay Golf Course for their first tournament of the 2008 season to compete in the Shamrock Intercollegiate hosted by Winthrop University.  After day one of the 54-hole, three-day tournament, the Red Flash found themselves in 13th place out of a 14 team field by combining for a five-man total of 375.

Charleston Southern sits atop the leaderboard by swinging for a 306, 54 strokes over par.  CSU is followed by host Winthrop, trailing by four (310), while Xavier University rounds out the top three with a comprehensive 315.  Iowa and Princeton are knotted in fourth, with the remainder of the field listed in their respective places: Murray State, Siena, USC Upstate, South Dakota State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College, The Citadel, Saint Francis and Tennessee State.

Jutta Degerman, tournament leader after the first 18, ripped off the tournament’s only round under par with a 71.

Saint Francis senior Samantha Milosh (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) fronted the charge for the Red Flash once again, turning in a top 20 effort by carding a seven-over par 79 (40-39).  Milosh is even with two other players in 15th place.

Sophomore Lisa Kocin (Padua, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) came in with a 96 (49-47) after her romp through Tega Bay’s 5,969-yard challenge, slotting her T-69th.  Freshman Laura Smith (State Line, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) swung for a 74th place score of 99 (50-49) while senior Stephanie Switzer (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) finished two strokes behind with a 101 (50-51), T-75th.  Freshman Caryn Doege (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) inked a 105 (52-53), logging her in 80th place.

The Red Flash’s day two, uphill battle begins tomorrow, March 22, with tee times starting at 8:30am on both the front and back tees on Tega Bay’s beautiful lay out.
