Red Flash in 6th Place After Round 1 of Mount Saint Mary's Classic
Littlestown, Pa. / Quail Valley Golf Course – After day one of the Red Flash’s fall season finale at the Mount Saint Mary’s Classic, senior Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario / A.B. Lucas.), recent recipient of the NEC Golfer of the Week award, once again paced the Red Flash with a one-over 73 (37-36) to slot the Flash in 6th place. Gowdy’s 73 was the third lowest card for the first 18 holes of play.
Friday’s tournament started at 8:30am as a shotgun start. After all 69 participants finished tallying up their digits, the host team, Mount Saint Mary’s, came away with a two-stroke lead over Temple University by shooting a team score of 291. Hofstra University maintained its third-place spot after making a collective 296.
Saint Francis remains just 11 strokes off the Mountaineers' lead before heading into Saturday’s 8:30am shotgun start. Skilled senior Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec / Academie Les Estacades) made it in just two strokes over par for a 74 (38-36) and sophomore Michael Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) put together a 77 (36-41) to keep the Flash in contention. Also swinging away for Saint Francis in round one were sophomores Aaron Osysho (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) and Patrick Finlan (London, Ontario/London Central), inking a 78 (39-39) and 79 (40-39), respectively.
“The conditions were a little tough today, but the boys played well. I believe we have a good shot at coming back to claim our last tournament of the season,” first year head coach Nick Wheeler acclaimed.
Tomorrow, Saturday, October 20, all 13 teams will tee off at 8:30am via shotgun start at the Quail Valley Golf Course for the conclusion of the Mount Saint Mary’s Classic. Friday’s round played a total of 6,834 yards.
