Sanctions for Violations of the Drug & Alcohol Policy
The University views violations of the Alcohol & Drug Policy as serious. Special sanctions are described below for violators of these policies.
First Offense: The following are minimal sanctions for those found in violation of the University policy on alcohol & drugs.
Individual Session: Student will complete an individual screening with staff at the Counseling Center. Student will be provided with information on available clinical services on campus. If appropriate, additional sessions will be scheduled.
Educational Workshop: Student will complete a 2½ hour educational workshop with other students. Workshop content addresses University policy on drugs, alcohol and state laws, peer pressure, progression of the addiction process and discussion on college binge drinking.
Letter of Concern to Parents: A letter of concern will be sent to the parents of violators by the Vice President for Student Development. The letter will address the University's concern regarding the violations and encourage parents to become involved in the intervention process.
Written Reprimand: Student will receive a written reprimand.
Notification of Referral Source: Notification of completion of sessions is made to the referring source.
Second Offense: The following are minimal sanctions for those students found in violation of the University policy on alcohol & drugs for a second time.
Individual Assessment: Student will be referred to the Director of Counseling Services for assessment and development of a treatment plan, if indicated.
Educational Workshop: At the discretion of the Director, student may again complete the 2½ hour educational workshop. Student may be directed to attend or participate in other relevant educational programs.
Disciplinary Probation: Student will be placed on disciplinary probation. Parents will be notified of the conditions of probation. Student and parents will be advised that future drug/alcohol violations may result in the student's suspension from the University. See page 43 of the Student Handbook for a description of disciplinary probation.
Notification of Referral Source: Notification of completion of sessions is made to the referring source.
Students who violate this policy are liable to disciplinary action by the University and/or criminal prosecution by civil authorities. The following violations of the drug and alcohol policy will result in more severe penalties.
Sale or furnishing of alcoholic beverages of any kind to a minor (person under twenty-one years of age)
Possession, distribution, sale or use of a controlled substance (e.g., marijuana)
Possession, distribution or use of illegal drugs (e.g., cocaine, heroin)
Possession of drug paraphernalia (e.g., bongs, pipes, etc.)
Third Offense: Students found in violation of the alcohol & drug policy for a third time will be referred to the Vice President for Student Development. Students who violate the policy for a third time are subject to suspension or dismissal from the University.
